I’m Canadian. I would say that I don’t think much about it in terms of current events, I haven’t heard much in the news about it in recent years. And my assumption from that is that’s probably a good sign. There used to be a steady stream of bad news, and “no news” lies along the path in between “bad news” and “good news.”

I did see a video recently about Iraq’s plans for a giant new port facility on that little tidbit of Persian Gulf shoreline it has and road/rail link from it up through to Turkey, and thence onward into Europe. It sounded like a very optimistic development if it can be seen through to fruition, opening an alternative trade corridor to the Suez Canal. Anything that diversifies a country’s economy is a good thing, and anything that removes single points of failure in global shipping networks is also a good thing. I can’t imagine the Houthi obstruction of the Red Sea would still be a thing by the time that route opens up but at least it’ll be an option if something like it happens again.

If you simply don’t want to engage in a discussion with him, then that’s fine, you should let him know that you’re not interested in talking about it. You don’t have to justify your choices to him, if you want to use a particular browser then that’s fine and if he spontaneously decides he needs to “talk you out of it” then that’s a dick move. Tell him that you don’t want to debate the subject and it’s no skin off of his nose so he shouldn’t try to engage you in one.

But if you’re asking “how can I convince him that he’s wrong”, well that is engaging in the debate. And if you’re going to engage in a debate you should try to be as open about it as you’d like your debate opponent to be in turn. Have you considered that perhaps he has some valid points and is not taking that position just to be contrarian?

Personally, I find that it’s pretty much impossible to talk someone with a strongly-held position out of that position. The value of Internet debates with people like that is that lots of spectators who don’t have such strongly-held positions may be watching, but when it’s a one-on-one situation it’s likely to be a futile and frustrating effort with no benefit. So I would advise going with the “don’t bother engaging” route. But of course, if you feel strongly that you want to engage, I can’t change your mind on that and won’t try. It’s your time to spend.

I think it’s generally pointless, spiteful, and only harms ordinary users who might someday have found value in coming across your old posts on Reddit from a search. It doesn’t harm Reddit itself, the “value” of your individual account is very small compared to their vast archive. And they still have it, deletion just removes it from the public-facing front end. If the reason you’re deleting it is because you don’t want AI to be trained on it, that ship has long ago sailed. There are downloadable archives of Reddit floating around that it will never be deleted from.

So I wouldn’t bother.

I’m saying they can do it. If you don’t have a sample then you can’t do it and the question of “rights” is entirely moot.

If you do have a sample, then questions of rights and enforcement and whatnot can be addressed. “What jurisdiction are you in?” Is an important first question for that. But if you don’t have a sample then we never get to that step.

Do you have any samples of his voice?

Proof-of-work has inherent centralization pressures due to economy of scale. You get more profit per hash per second of mining power when you’ve got a bigger mining operation. That’s not the case for proof-of-stake.

You’re welcome to try other methods but LLMs seem to be working best so far.

With a decompiler it should be pretty straightforward to automatically check for “hallucinations,” the compiled code is still right there and you can compare the decompiled logic to the original.

The time at which the source code was lost is irrelevant for decompilation, decompilation uses the binary files. Those are the files that are out there being played right now.

Until recently decompilers tended to produce rough and useless code for the most part, but I’m looking forward to seeing what modern LLMs will bring to decompilation. They could be trained specifically for the task.

Shush, this is an opportunity for people to dump on Microsoft, if you take it from them they’ll turn on you.

My advice against getting too deeply invested applies to those companies and communities as well.

I once got permabanned from a politics subreddit (I think it was /r/canadapolitics) that had a “downvoting is not permitted” rule, because there was a guy getting downvotes and I offered him an explanation for why I thought he was getting them. That counted as evidence that I had downvoted him, I guess.

My response: I sent one message to the mods that was essentially “really?” And then when there was no response I unsubbed from that subreddit and moved on. I see no point in participating in subreddits with ridiculous rules and ridiculous enforcement.

Granted, unsubbing from politics subreddits is generally a good idea even when not banned. But eh.

The only other subreddit I’m banned in is /r/artisthate, which I never visited in the first place. Apparently they scan other subreddits for signs of users who don’t hate artificial intelligence enough and preemptively ban them. That was kind of hilarious.

Anyway, I guess my advice is don’t get too deeply “invested” in a community that can be so easily and arbitrarily taken away from you in the first place. And also manage your passwords better.

This sort of thing always reminds me of the classic Louis CK bit from Conan O’Brien: Everything is amazing and nobody is happy.

There’s also a simple toggle to turn Rewind off in the settings menu.

People are really going bonkers over Rewind, it’s almost a sort of mass hysteria at this point. Yes, it appears to be a very insecure and risky feature at this point. So just turn it off. There’s lots of features in any OS that you can set up in ways that will make your system insecure, this is just a particular one of those. Microsoft isn’t going to force it to be enabled, the ensuing legal shitstorm would be epic. I doubt they’ll roll it out to a large audience in its current state.

I’ve mainly been using open-weight models I can run locally to back them, so it’ll last as long as personal computers do.

But I really do find them useful, so they are getting it right in at least some cases.

I actually want AI enhancements to many of the programs I use. I find them useful.

Now watch as I get tossed out the window.

That’s not true. You’re likely exposed to a very biased sample, there are a lot of people who simply don’t pay close attention to politics most of the time and may just now be getting the rude awakening that Trump really is a fraud. There are people who really will hold their vote over the candidate being a literal felon, and being in prison would hammer that home even more strongly.

They licensed Reddit to do what they want with it by agreeing to Reddit’s ToS.

“It’s ruined and that’s a bad thing, so let’s ruin it more. Including the older stuff that wasn’t as badly ruined.”

This is a very childish approach to life, IMO. If you don’t like Reddit any more then just move on and leave it be for those who do still like it.
