I didn’t get diagnosed until 18 and it changed the game. I was very hesitant to start stimulants because of misinformation and stigma, but my doctor corrected a lot of that and it’s changed my life.

What they mean to say is “The largely meaningless or deliberately misleading metrics the government uses to make its own report card say things are going great!”
Everybody keeps talking about how the “economy” is so strong. That just means the stock market is doing well and owners of capital are happy.
Meanwhile, the US has the highest rate of homelessness in its recorded history. Worth noting that the way numbers are reported for things like homelessness, unemployment, and the like are very intentionally designed to under-report.
Local, state, and federal government all have a long history of changing the method of reporting/calculating those metrics during a term in office so they can say “unemployment dropped 30% under my watch!” When all they really did was not count 30% of the people previously counted.
Yes, wages are finally rising, and it has nothing to do with the government. It’s entirely the work of unions and organization of labor to raise wages, and it’s still got a long way to go.
The best thing that anyone can do is vote for better representation at every opportunity.
The best thing that not everyone can do is talk to a doctor if you have signs of depression or other mental illness. Yes, it’s possible to have those things brought on by circumstance, and no, that doesn’t mean you don’t have to do anything about it.
If you can’t afford doctor’s visits like that, look up non-profit health care organizations. You may be lucky enough to have real, free Healthcare options available through places like Good Samaritan.
And don’t forget to let yourself acknowledge the REAL progress of the world. We’re seeing rapid development and insight on treatments for cancers, dementia, new vaccines, renewable tech, and computational efficiency.
There are many broken systems to overcome, but even still there are incredible humans building the foundations for an incredible future if we keep working at it. Maybe we can help make sure Gen Alpha gets a fair shot.

I’ll also note that I had skipped college and had been working, and was about to go back to school. She was about to start her second year in college.
There are multiple ways people can find themselves on the same path and there was some serendipity for sure.
To the point of many other people here, yes, over the next five years she is going to evolve more than you as a person. So just understand going that growing apart is more likely than if you were both in your 30’s.

I’m turning 31 this year, and my girlfriend is 25.
We’ve been together six years now. I didn’t realize she was still 18 until the end of our first date, and she caught that I was visibly startled by it.
I owned up that I didnt realize and assumed from our interactions that she was at least 20-22 and she laughed and apologized, saying she thought I knew her age.
After going home and thinking about how well we hit it off, and how she found my concern amusing, I decided I was being silly and that if the age gap was a problem it would make itself evident.
Best decision ever. Nothing wrong with paying attention to those things, just keep open communication with each other 👍

Nowadays, everybody is trying to talk, like they have something to say. But nothing comes out when they move their lips, just a bunch of gibberish, like they forgot about Dre.
The YouTube Channel “Rose Anvil” is a leather worker and their entire channel is about shoes. They routinely take big brands and cut then in half to do an in-depth breakdown of their materials amd construction.
They made a video recently about a brand someone else mentioned in this thread.
They also have videos where they show their favorite shoes from the past year and what they like to wear personally.
Met Robert Patrick (best known as the T-1000 from Terminator 2).
He had a booth at a Horror convention. I knew nothing about the convention and didn’t know a ton about his other work, but his local agent asked their local family if they knew a Graphic Designer because the booth posters for Robert and Billy Boyd got lost in luggage.
I eneded up being a last minute call for help, had the agent send me what official images they had, and threw together what I could in an hour or two so I could get it to a printer in time.
Was right by Robert at his booth all day, interacting with his fans. He seems like he probably has some political views I’d disagree with, but I’ve never seen anyone spend time with fans like him. He truly put the time and work in with every single person in that line.
Had no clue how many diverse fandoms he was part of. He seems strongheaded, but very professional and super loving to the people that show up for him.
Got to have lunch with him and Billy Boyd that day, and they’re total dorks together in the best way. Billy Boyd is 100% the sweetest man and it was hilarious realizing he had voiced Chuckie.
When I’m in that pit, most good advice isn’t helpfull.
What is helpful is to acknowledge that the pendulum of this cold and indifferent universe swings both ways.
When you’re deep in the shit, and you see all the walls crumbling down, and you feel how fleeting all the good things are, just remember that the bad things are just as fickle and fleeting.
The world has been ending since it began. It’s important to pay attention, notice, and do your part when the opportunity presents itself. It’s equally important to remember that none of the apocalyptic events in human history has ended humanity yet. When you can’t stop ruminating on the lowest points of your life, remember that you’ve been through all of that, and you’re still here.
Life is a struggle, and a beautiful mess. Nobody is ever “done” with the hard parts, but we’re never “done” with the good parts either.

I definitely miss old Reddit, but it’s definitely dead now.
Used to be my go-to scrolling every day. After they screwed 3rd party apps I found Lemmy and love it. There was an obscure open source Reddit app that used scraping that was still working so I’d been using Lemmy and Reddit about 50/50. Nice thing was the Reddit app kept me logged out with no engagement so I wasn’t feeding the beast.
The other day all those little scraping Reddit apps finally died. Just useless. So fuck em I guess. If I ever need a more real-time larger user base I can go on desktop for it, but there is no mobile Reddit option (including offical) that’s even remotely usable now.
Can’t believe how much better the Lemmy experience is, even with its shortcomings. My only issue has been that the desktop web access feels rough. It also stinks not having the benefits of centralized storage. With Reddit I could bookmark anything and everything of interest in something like Raindrop.io and go see it any time months later. With Lemmy things often seem to be gone in days or weeks, or an instance will just be formatted horribly on desktop.
Still more convenient than Reddit and I hope the dev efforts keep polishing things up! 👍
