It’s a single registry key or a single group policy edit, and I’m not talking to the average user, I’m talking to Lemmy users.
I’m saying as far as annoyances in windows go, this is incredibly simple to change if you are at all familiar with tweaking advanced windows shit.
I mean for sure but I play games with my nephews so for me dual booting Windows is worth it, and it’s certainly something to consider when deciding how you’re gonna set up your system, as much as that sucks.
I hope it’ll change on games that do, or they’ll set up a workaround for Linux, but for now if you care about a game that uses it, ysk beforehand so that you can decide whether to dump that game or dual boot.
You can remove the Internet search and make it do normal search pretty easily. I know I know you shouldn’t have to, just saying putting an hour into cleaning Windows is worth.

If you’re okay with Windows 10, why not LTSC? No feature updates but you do get security updates for an extended lifecycle.

My 09 VW CC has knobs for bass, treble, and mid, in addition to volume. Seat heaters, AC, everything is tactile and I can operate anything without looking.
I know it’s manufacturers wanting to save money, but it’s so annoying that we’re going backwards. Touchscreen is a form of input. Just because it’s higher tech doesn’t mean it should replace tactile inputs in all applications ffs.
Strange, I’ve had the opposite experience. I remember early on 11 was really bad and buggy in general so I waited to move my main install, but it’s been fantastic for me on laptop and desktop.
Granted, I’m very particular about my Windows installs and know how to clean everything up pretty well, so I have no idea how out of box experience compares, but at least with how I use it, 11 has been fantastic, performance has been much more consistent, I don’t need to reboot as often, and it lasted way longer before I felt the need for a fresh install than any of my 10 installations.
I still have certain things I’m not able to entirely fix that bug me (still searching for a way to remove the stupid Office 365 ad from the settings homepage) that weren’t in Windows 10, but the settings in 11 are overall SO much better, window snapping is way better, explorer is way better, HDR support is way better, multi-monitor support is better, default apps in general are better, it’s becoming easier to remove built-in apps you don’t want, and just a whole bunch of small QOL changes and updated, more consistent styling, it’s just a much nicer OS to use at this point.
If you haven’t tried it yet, Tiny11 23H2 just came out, and while there’s still some stuff I fixed after installation, it does an excellent job of trimming most of the fat off Win11 without sacrificing usability. You can use Windows update like normal (and you’ll have to update after install) but it may be worth another try if you haven’t tried 11 recently. IMO it’s a really nice upgrade over 10 if you can fix all the little annoyances like the new right-click and such. (BloatyNosy on GitHub is what I use post-install, in addition to a few powershell commands and such)
IDK if this counts as shell, but I just discovered Alternative A2DP Driver which allows you to use LDAC with compatible Bluetooth headphones. Works BEAUTIFULLY for me.
Yeah I created a lot of content for reddit, so there’s the part of me that as a creator wants to pull my content from a platform that I don’t want to profit off of me any longer.
But there’s also the part of me that has seen my content get reposted endlessly, which to me is always fun to see. And I want the originals to be available to people still.
It’s a tough call. I stopped posting anything after the app shutdown, and have basically all but stopped using the site, so I hold no attachment to my account at this point, I’d just hate for all of my content to become harder to find.
Maybe I should just set up my own instance or even just a website with all my gifs and such.
Yup. I stopped posting/commenting on reddit after third party apps were shut down, and now I’m fully on Lemmy.
Not deleting my reddit or anything yet, but reddit lost me, and I created lots of OC for that site. It’ll be interesting to see, but anecdotally reddit feels like it’s lost something since the shutdown. Maybe that’s just me tho.
That’s not hypocrisy. They’re not advocating one thing and doing another.
If you don’t like the ads don’t use the app.

Oh I agree completely. I also think a lot of people just don’t realize that many of the things they think of as part of Windows can be tweaked or removed, so they just sit there assuming they have to live with it when there’s a fix that most people could implement if they google a how-to guide (or they could ask their nerdy friend).
I love helping friends set up Windows installs, because they’re always so shocked at how little clutter there is and how well everything works. At the same time it makes me mad that all of that is necessary at all, and I’m swearing at Microsoft the whole time I’m helping them.
