I know, I agree. It’s just, I’m tired of people using bad coasters then complaining when they stick to the bottom of their glass spilling condensation water all over their lap and shirt. This is the reason that happens. That said, I would totally love to have good floppy disk look alike coasters. But being given an actual one as a coaster won’t amuse me, it would make me groan.
Ok, this is a sidetrack but hear me out. Floppy disks would make awful coasters. A coaster has to be somewhat absorbent to avoid spilling condensation water on the table. This is why cork is the most popular material for coasters. The best coasters are a cloth top over a cork shape with a plastic rim and a felt bottom. This ensures total protection to the table and gives enough freedom to be creative with shapes, prints, colors and figures. The novelty printed plastic disks are the worst coasters possible, and floppy disks will only drip all over the table defeating the purpose of a coaster.
Never let perfect be the enemy of good enough. Do you want to do the thing or do you want to stress about the thing for days, delay it for months while you save up then suffer regret anxiety about whether it was the correct choice? For a lot of people the latter is the part they enjoy about the hobby. For others it isn’t worth the time and resources requires, they’d rather do the thing now with what they have and enjoy it as it is. Where does the inflection point lies between hassle and enjoyable results is personal and everyone has different criteria for different goals and contexts, and that is OK.
The GoT strategy only works if the writing is good. Dialogue and plot quality are vital, specially when you’re watching an episode to episode release model. Often times I felt like I was watching a bunch of middle schoolers cosplaying and making up the dialogue and story as they went along on the playground. Nothing of interest was happening, no deep topics were explored, what was said had no literary or poetical interest, it lacked any complex structure and it sometimes didn’t have any structure at all, there was nothing to discuss on the hypothetical water cooler talk. Its cancelation is probably going to drive more conversation than any of its episodes ever did.
The producers once alluded that they were being review bombed by conservatives for the acolyte being too woke. Now, that might be true, but, the show also sucked in more than one way, which means there was no one to push back the reviews.
Lesson time. In security strategy we have the risk equation. The calculated risk of something is the magnitude of the harm it could potentially do, times the probability of it actually happening, all divided by any prevention measures you have or can take. Nothing is perfectly or inherently safe or unsafe, you always have to calculate the risks taking into account all the factors, and balance risk against operative costs. There’s a lot of economic value in a low risk system that doesn’t require much intervention or maintenance.
Although the most paranoid affirmations around Y2K were certainly exaggerations, it was a very real problem. Nothing bad happened because there was a worldwide effort to fix it. Sure, planes weren’t going to fall out of the sky or anything, but there were some issues and it did cost some money for those who did suffer the consequences. It is not even the only issue with date tracking in software.
Habituation. We get used to seeing the same things all the time. When you do novelty or high adrenaline experiences your perception changes. Try jumping with a parachute out of a plane, or a high altitude zip lining, driving a race car around a track, etc. Aftewards you experience a sense of heightened perception and appreciation.

If I want something new I use gnooks. Their recommendations are usually spot on with my tastes. The secret to reading is immediate access. I got an ereader and that multiplied my interest in reading. Without it I wouldn’t read as much as I do.
I do. I track my reading on Storygraph because it motivates me and helps me keep up the habit when I hit a slump or end up with some uninspiring piece. I don’t have to fumble for a new book to read because all recommendations and interests are neatly registered and organized. My progress is tracked and I can celebrate my success. I also have a huge library of digital books, over 2 thousand. By tracking I can keep a log of what I have and haven’t read. Sometimes, after a long while, you forget the names of specific books in series, or where you were last off in a particular author’s collection, etc. It helps with it all. But I don’t connect or share that with anyone. Nor do I feel the need to push it on anyone. Friends and acquaintances are not that into reading as I am and they see no use for a social network about books, and I don’t want nosy strangers rummaging though my reading history.
But he says it confidently, and that’s all that matter.

I have two versions of Teams installed on my work PC. The regular old Teams that is apparently not long for this world anymore. And New Teams, which is exactly the same as old teams but on a different tech stack (?) That will replace the old one. MS has lost the plot, they have somehow a worse product management than Google.
It cannot integrate with or handle existing VoIP services, receive or answer phone calls, handle land and cellular switches and terminals, and it cannot route or transfer calls (audio or video) automatically. It doesn’t handle automated away time messages or rerouting, auto-replys to chat, it cannot serve users external of the organization. And those are only the few things I use daily, sure there must be many more things that Skype can do an Teams just doesn’t because it’s a slack and zoom hybrid. It just doesn’t fit the role Skype has in my org and it’s why we continue to run both together until the very second the Skype servers are finally shut down.
Corporate, companies that bought all-in into MS ecosystem. Which is weird that they added this to the mobile client as Skype for business is ending support in 2025, it’s supposed to be replaced by Teams, which it not ready BTW. So, I don’t know what any of these is supposed to do, perhaps just rake in more data before the service dies for good?
