It’s a very deliberate phrasing, since not everyone agrees that initialisms are not acronyms.

Personally I think that “ackhually that’s an initialism not an acronym 🤓” is exactly the kind of ultimately irrelevant distinction that internet know-it-alls love to know and point out. I know because I used to be like that too when I was younger.

But often those distinctions are not universally acknowledged or useful in all contexts. Like how strawberries are not scientifically berries, but we still often group them as berries.

Nitpicking word definitions is pointless when the distinction being pointed out is not relevant for the conversation.

I agree in general, but to mention one potential benefit: DVD only supports SD resolutions, streaming services may have the same content in HD.

They should of course keep that in mind, but it’s not that “should” should always be followed by a verb directly. The problem is that “of” in this context is a mishearing/spelling of “have”, so they should in this case have written it like that instead.

I’ve been considering paying for Premium, for largely the reasons you mention.

One question I have is, as a Premium user, do you have to disable ad block/uBlock on Youtube so that YT can track which videos you watch and pay the creators accordingly?

I think it’s polite to tell what you have changed when you edit a post as long as the platform does not have edit history visible (which as far as I can tell Lemmy does not).

Yeah. I don’t expect Reddit to necessarily collapse immediately, or Lemmy to replace Reddit for all Reddit users. I’m just happy if Lemmy becomes at least a medium-sized social network. That means that it would have moved from a niche platform into a large enough ecosystem to sustain itself, and become a viable alternative to Reddit, like you said.

With a huge platform like Reddit, the impact of the current events might not be instantly obvious. But with everything going on recently with Twitter, Reddit, Mastodon, Lemmy, and even Threads, I think it’s clear that there’s some kind of transformation of the social media landscape going on. But how long it will take, and what the end result will look like, is anybody’s guess. Maybe it’s the fall of the old giants and a rise of new, more democratic platforms. Maybe the giants keep standing, but significantly weakened, with a bunch of new, smaller, more open platforms becoming real alternatives. Or maybe it’s something else.

Be it as it may, I’m glad that the status quo is being shaken up a bit.
